Expert determination is a process where both parties agree to appoint an expert to resolve a technical matter that the parties are unable to agree on.

The advantage is that this is the best way to keep a good working relationship between the parties. The parties can agree for the outcome to be final and binding and this will resolve the situation without an adversarial process that usually damages relationships beyond repair.

Both parties put their interpretation of the situation to the independent and neutral expert. The process is collaborative, not adversarial.
